Repair or Replace Your AC?
Not sure whether to fix your AC or replace it? Weigh five honest factors — age, repair cost, breakdown frequency, efficiency, and old refrigerant — to make the right call.
Repair a newer system with a minor, affordable fix. Lean toward replacing when your AC is older, breaks down often, needs a major repair like the compressor, or still runs on phased-out refrigerant. The right call comes down to five honest questions.
How old is your AC?
Age is the first thing to weigh. In our climate the AC runs hard most of the year, so Valley systems tend to wear out sooner than the same unit would up north. The older your system, the more a replacement makes sense — you're putting money into equipment that's already near the end of its life. A unit only a few years old is usually worth fixing; one well into its second decade rarely is.
Does the cost of the repair make sense?
Compare the repair to what the system is still worth. A small part on a fairly new AC is an easy yes. A major repair on an aging system is where people get stuck — and the compressor is the classic example. Replacing a failed compressor is one of the most expensive fixes there is, and on an older unit that money is often better put toward a new system. For real ranges, see our AC replacement cost guide.
How often does it break down?
One repair is normal. A pattern is a message. If you've called for service two or three summers in a row, the system is telling you it's tired. Those repair bills add up, and each breakdown tends to land on the hottest day of the year. A system you can't trust in peak Valley heat is rarely worth pouring more money into.
Would a new system actually run better?
Modern equipment is far more efficient than what it replaces. A new high-efficiency system rated in SEER2 generally means lower monthly energy use and noticeably better humidity control — a real comfort upgrade in our muggy summers. There's also refrigerant to consider: many older units still run on phased-out R-22 (often called Freon), which has become scarce and costly to recharge. If your system leaks R-22, that alone can tip the decision toward replacement.
So how do I decide?
If your AC is newer, breaks down rarely, and needs a minor repair, fix it — and keep it healthy with regular tune-ups. If it's old, unreliable, and facing a big-ticket repair, replacement usually wins. Still unsure whether the upgrade pays off? Read is a new AC worth it? When you're ready, we'll give you several options at different price points, explain the tradeoffs with no pressure, and waive the diagnostic fee when we make the repair. A replacement can be spread over monthly payments, so a sudden failure doesn't have to be a crisis.

Plain-language definitions — see the full HVAC glossary.
- SEER2
- Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 — the current U.S. rating for how efficiently an AC or heat pump cools over a season. It replaced the old SEER scale in 2023 using a tougher, more realistic test. Higher SEER2 means lower running cost for the same cooling.
- Compressor
- The pump in your outdoor unit that moves refrigerant through the system — often called the 'heart' of the AC. A failed compressor is one of the most expensive repairs, which is a key factor in the repair-or-replace decision.
- Refrigerant
- The chemical that absorbs heat indoors and releases it outdoors as it cycles through your system. If your system is low on refrigerant, it usually means there's a leak — adding more without fixing the leak is only a temporary patch.
