Mini-Split vs. Central Air
Central air cools a whole house through ducts; a mini-split cools room by room with none. The right pick depends on your ductwork and how many spaces you cool.
Central air cools a whole house through ducts from one system; a ductless mini-split cools room by room with no ducts at all — so your choice comes down to whether you have good ductwork and how many spaces you need to cool. Both can be efficient, modern heat-pump systems; they just deliver the air differently.
How are they actually different?
- Central air — one indoor unit pushes conditioned air through a network of ducts to every room, controlled by one (or a few) thermostats.
- Mini-split (ductless) — one outdoor unit feeds one or more indoor "heads," each cooling its own zone with its own setting and no ducts.
When does central air win?
If your home already has sound ductwork and you want uniform, whole-house cooling that mostly disappears into the background, central air is usually the simpler, lower-cost-per-square-foot choice. It's the classic fit for a typical ducted Valley home where you're replacing an existing system.
When does a mini-split win?
- Homes without existing ducts, or with ducts in poor shape.
- Additions, casitas, and garages — see mini-splits for additions, casitas & garages.
- When you want room-by-room zoning to stop cooling empty spaces.
- Older Valley homes where running new ductwork would be expensive or destructive.

Which is more efficient?
Both can hit high efficiency. Ductless has one edge: it avoids the energy lost through leaky or hot-attic ducts, and zoning means you only cool the rooms in use. Central air's efficiency depends heavily on duct condition — well-sealed ducts close much of that gap. There's also a third option for a single problem room; if a window unit is on the table, compare all three in mini-split vs. central vs. window.
How do I choose?
Start with two questions: do you have good ductwork, and are you cooling a whole house or specific spaces? The other half is correct sizing either way — see what size AC do I need? Still not sure? Book a free estimate and we'll recommend the better value for your home, no pressure.

Plain-language definitions — see the full HVAC glossary.
- Ductless System
- A system that delivers conditioned air directly into a room without ductwork. Ductless (mini-split) systems are ideal for additions, casitas, garages, and older RGV homes without ducts.
- Mini-Split
- A ductless heat pump with a small outdoor unit connected to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor 'heads.' Each head can be controlled separately, so you only cool the rooms you're using.
- Central Air
- A single system that cools the whole home and distributes air through a network of ducts. The most common setup in newer RGV homes.
